UNESCO World Heritage race
One of the most gruelling sporting events in Mallorca takes place next week in some of its most beautiful and spectacular landscapes. It's the now annual Galatzo trail race which pits fell runners against the mountainous Sierra Tramuntana World Heritage area in Calvia.
Growing in popularity each year, the 2020 edition of the race has achieved its highest number of participants ever; 800, the maximum allowed for logistical and safety reasons, 150 more then last year and with around 35% of competitors coming from abroad.
The route of the Galatzo Trail is 99% within the public Galatzo Finca near Capdella which covers an area of 1400 hectares and easily accommodates the tough 43 kilometres of the main race and 23 km of the Galatzo Half.
Taking place next Sunday, 15th March, the objectives of the organisers, Calvia Council, are to increase the interest in the sport of mountain running and to publicise the facilities and spectacular beauty of the Calvia area, particularly out of the main holiday season.
Alongside the race itself there are a host of activities related to mountain running, with lots of events for family members of the runners – junior races, courses on mountain running and so on, and in addition the facilities for the runners will include changing rooms, showers, and physiotherapy stations.
Anyway, even if running is not your bag, just watch the video to see how stunning the scenery is around the Galatzo Finca, which is open to the public for visits and whose fascinating history is the subject of an article I wrote in 2018.
I have to say that I'm full of admiration for the runners on those steep, stony 'paths' in the vid, my knees are already knackered just watching them!
