Santa Maria Novella
Palma's golden mile shopping area around the Paseo del Borne in the city centre is continuing to attract high profile retailers and is expanding outwards into the surrounding streets. The area's latest acquisition is the high profile, luxury fragrance and beauty products retailer Santa Maria Novella.
The company, Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, to give its full Sunday best title has its origins in Florence 800 years ago when Dominican monks started to distill the herbs they cultivated for mainly medicinal purposes – rose water being a prime example which was used against the plague.
Later they produced a fragrance for Catherine de Medici who became the Queen of France – so by Royal Appointment applies – and in 1621 actually set up the fully fledged perfume and fragrance business that exists today, almost 400 years later.
Luxury products though they are, and loved by the likes of Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Tom Hanks, they found mass fame and notoriety thanks to a well known (fictional) cannibal. Their shop in Florence was featured in the film Silence of the Lambs when Hannibal Lecter buys perfume for the FBI agent Clarice Starling.
The shop in Palma, only the third in Spain behind Madrid and Valencia, is due to open on 4th April and is situated at the end of the Sant Feliu street (turn at the hotel Can Alomar on the Plaza del Borne) where it becomes Can Salas street. There you'll find a whole range of fragrances and beauty products for women, men and cats and dogs!
Choose from ancient preparations, liqueurs, skin care and bath products, perfumes, home fragrances, sun protection, wax products and candles, and of course pet accessories. I'll certainly be visiting to pick up some presents for all my loved ones, though I don't think my pussy posse will appreciate the cat shampoo!
