Chocolate, sugar, butter, and cream
Forget the healthy Mediterranean diet this Sunday and give yourself a much needed cholesterol boost to get your triglycerides levels soaring at the Esporles sweet fair. For just one day, traditionally the first Sunday in October, so the 7th of October this year, this little town nestling in the skirts of the Tramuntana mountains becomes dessert central, Mallorca!
This Sunday the 14th Fira Dolça d'Esporles is held there and features some of the sweetest, most moreish, most delicious desserts, cakes and sweets known to man. Just strolling between the many stalls of the bakers and cake makers would make fans of TV's 'Bake Off' think they'd died and gone to chocolate heaven!
Now, we're still in Spain so there's a lot more than cake eating to be done here, with music, fun, games and other entertainment to be had throughout the day which you can see on the link to the programme of events.
Best of all though is the preparation and baking of the world's largest Xuclador – roughly translated as brioche or butter cake - which starts at 10:30 and whose Homer Simpsonesque dimensions of 55 metres in length will be available to sample free at 12:00 together with milky coffee or hot chocolate, courtesy of the town hall.
It promises to be a treat to look forward to as the recipe for the Xuclador comes from one of the towns most respected bakeries, Cas Currot. I think I'll be giving breakfast and elevenses a miss to make room for some sweet stuff at the fair!
