The jury's out
Over the last few years the hotels in the Balearic Islands have spent millions modernising and reforming what were traditional package tour hotels from the 60's and 70's or transforming iconic old buildings into modern, stylish accommodation suitable for today's more savvy travellers.
To mark this fact there's an award pending at the moment for the 'Caixabank Best Hotel in the Balearic Islands 2017' whose winner will be announced at the big FITUR travel trade fair in Madrid in January. Now unlike other 'best hotel' awards chosen by consumers which concentrate on facilities, service, food and the likes, this award will be won by the hotel which 'has developed the best construction project, comprehensive reform or actions in the fields of design, innovation and modernisation.'
The jury, comprised of representatives from CaixaBank, the Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca, the Hotel Business Federation of Ibiza and Formentera, the Hotel Association of Menorca and the architecture studios OHLAB and SCT has already selected the following hotels as finalists in the two categories, under 50 rooms;
Jardí de ses Bruixes (Menorca), Sant Francesc Singular Hotel (Mallorca) and Pleta de Mar, Luxury Hotel (Mallorca)
and over 50 rooms;
NOBU Hotel (Ibiza), Gran Melia Resort de Mar (Mallorca), Hard Rock Hotel (Ibiza) and The Sea Hotel by Grupotel (Mallorca).
Let's take a quick look at the Mallorca hotels
The Sant Francesc in central Palma was an old mansion house which has undergone a stylish transformation to an elegant yet modern hotel.
The Pleta de Mar by Nature in Canyamel is unobtrusively positioned in the landscape, almost merging into it, in an environmentally friendly way.
The Melia de Mar has a great sea front location in Illetas, handy for Palma or golf, and has undergone a terrific transformation.
In Can Picafort, The Sea Hotel has been transformed from fairly ordinary package tour hotel to light, bright modern accommodation.
