Lounger vs. lounger
Is there anything more stressful on a sun, sea and sand holiday than the thorny problem of sunloungers? Skim through any Tripadvisor forum and everywhere people are moaning about having to get up at dawn to put a towel on a lounger to get a spot by the hotel pool, or moaning about loungers with only towels, but no people on them!
Down at the beach the big moan is the amount of money people have to spend to hire a couple of loungers and a parasol for a day, every day, for a week or more. Astute Trippees advise buying a cheap lounger from the Chinese supermarket and ditching it at the end of the holiday.
Apparently, there is now an alternative to this and the official sun lounger concessions on Mallorca's beaches are not happy. They've been to see the council in Calvia to complain about unfair competition in the lounger hire business as places are springing up where tourists can hire a cheap portable lounger and parasol for much less than at the beach.
The official hire companies have a rate set by the council to charge €4.50 per lounger per day in the likes of Magalluf, Santa Ponsa and Peguera, all in Calvia. They say that the other hire places are only charging €2 and have seen a massive increase in tourists bringing these folding loungers to the beach and a 50% drop in their own income.
They say it is unfair because they have to pay for general maintenance, cleaning and security of the beaches from their profits whilst the new companies contribute nothing. At the moment, this is not a problem on every beach in Calvia, but they are fearful that if the council doesn't act quickly, that it soon will be.
