and a night market too!
The town council in Lluchmajor which is responsible for the holiday resort of s'Arenal close to Palma has come up with a great scheme to help promote the long sandy beach and the its promenade area. All throughout the summer they're providing all the equipment and personnel – they call them monitors – so that local people and tourists alike can participate in a number of sporting activities on the sand.
From now until the 15th September we'll be able to take part in some organised activities – football, volleyball, handball, rugby, Indiaca (a cross between volleyball and badminton) darts, frisbee, bowls, table games and petanca – between the hours of 12 and 18.
All supervised by the monitors, the council hopes the team games will draw large numbers of participants and promote some healthy international competition. Sounds like fun, and I'm already itching to race 100 yards over the sand in the blazing mid-day heat of August to touch down under the sticks for an easily convertible four pointer in the Brits v Mallorcans international Rugby League challenge match!
If sports aren't your bag in your summer hols, then how about visiting the new night market that the council are also promoting. Held every Tuesday near the Club Nautico, from 19 to 23 o'clock, the craft market will have 15 stalls selling top quality products made by the artisans themselves.
Take a look at both activities if you're in the area this summer.
