Food, drink and music, all under one roof!
Easter may well be a time for religious passion, solemnity and processions, but it's a also a few days public holiday from the stress and routine at work so why not make the most of it? Well, one place we can indulge in some of our earthly cravings is the gastronomic market in Palma, the Mercado San Juan.
Up and running as a gastro centre for less than a year, it has cultivated a reputation as the perfect place to spend time eating and drinking, listening to music and attending special events. It's a simple concept, take a large space with enigmatic architecture (it began life as Palma's slaughterhouse) fill it with small 'stands' selling a variety of different food and let people mingle together in the centre.
The 18 little stands lining the central hall sell a fabulous range of food – fried fish, thai, fideuas (paella with pasta not rice,) Japanese, oysters and shellfish, ham and cured meats, fresh pasta and pizza, rice dishes, gourmet burgers, Basque pintxos, omelettes, grilled meat, and sandwiches. Throw in a few glasses of red, white or cave, add a drop of beer, and start with a craft vermouth – today's fashion tipple – and you have the makings of a fab evening with friends that you haven't met yet!
Now for the best bit, San Juan has live music on every night over the holiday period and at the very convenient time of 7 or 8 pm! Tonight, Wednesday 23rd March swing band Monkey Doo (photo) play live from 8, Thursday sees pop and rock from Che Brothers at 8, Friday at 8 features covers singer Sahra Lee, DJ Ma Martinez hits the decks at 7 on Saturday and we wind up on Sunday at 8 with the smooth jazz stylings of the Reiko Quartet.
