New shop opens in Porto Cristo
Possibly the best known Mallorcan brand ever, Majorica, which produces organic man-made pearls, famous the world over, is on the move. They've been producing the pearls using a secretive method since 1890 and have continually updated their product range to remain at the forefront of the high end costume jewellery sector.
Founded by a German, Eduardo Hugo Heusch who perfected the technique to make the pearls, he chose Manacor in Mallorca as the site for his factory as it was the home of fine lace makers whose skills were ideal for stringing the pearls.
Now over 125 years later, Majorica are leaving their shop in Manacor and moving just down the road to what they consider is a much better position. They have new premises in Porto Cristo just by the Caves of Drach which is obviously a big tourist attraction and guarantees much more footfall from passing trade than in Manacor. The other attraction is that because Porto Cristo is a tourist resort, the hours which shops can open are much less restrictive than for non-tourist areas.
If you're in the area pop into the Porto Cristo shop, which also has a 'chill-out' area and have a browse, the jewellery they produce is really up to date, and here's one for the books, they also make a good range of gifts for men using the pearls which look really great. Don't worry if you can't get to the shop itself as the big Corte Ingles department stores stock Majorica, and you can buy it online, but it's always nice to see it, in the flesh so to speak, before spending your cash.
