Hip Jazz in Palma

Highlands Project in Concert

highlands project live

Some measure of the strength of Mallorca's home grown music scene can be gauged from the success of local Jazz combo Highlands Project. The band, who formed in 2013 as a Jazz fusion outfit, were the most sought after in last year's Teatro Principal programme and are paying a return visit next Wednesday 17th January at 20:00.

The band is a basic nine piece with keyboards, drums, guitars and brass section, augmented by guest singers and musicians from time to time. For their Teatro Principal gig in the theatre's more intimate Sala Petita which seats around 140 people, there'll be a total of 15 on stage to preview the band's latest and third album, Voiceover Vol 1.

I've had a quick listen to the album on Spotify and its 8 tracks contain some rather funky, rather chilled, and rather haunting tracks and a mix of Brazilian beats, New Orleans Jazz, Hip Hop and even the traditional improvised singing of Mallorcan 'Glosa' can be found on it. Understandable when you hear that the band members' influences range from Weather Report, Robert Glasper, Snarky Puppy, Chick Corea, and Hiromi Uehara!

With an 8 pm start, the 90 minute concert is nicely timed to give us all the opportunity to have a drink or two afterwards and tickets cost only €15 and can be bought online. Remember, numbers are limited, so get in there early if you want to go.
