Bodegas Vi Rei, Lluchmajor
Partial to a good wine and interested in how it's made? Then you'll be delighted to hear that one of Mallorca's newest and biggest vineyards, Bodegas Vi Rei has opened its doors to us all to taste, try, buy and generally learn all about the production of its wines.
A taste of Mallorca, the Bodega's extensive 85 hectare vineyards were planted as recently as 2012 using both indigenous island varieties of grape such as Premsal Blanc, Giro Ros, Mantonegro, and Callet, and international varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The earth, climate and proximity to the sea make ideal grape growing conditions with good drainage, alkaline soils, plenty of sunshine, and manual methods used from pruning to harvest provide a perfect wine with 'terroir' character.
Situated in the countryside – it would have to be with so much land – near Lluchmajor, Vi Rei is open to the public on a walk in basis where we can visit the shop to buy wine, food from the deli, straw hats and other goodies for ourselves or presents.
Better still, you can pre-arrange a whole range of exciting (well they are to me) tours and tastings featuring wine, wine, and more wine. You can choose from;
A guided tour and tasting - €10. Four wines, nibbles and a tour of the premises.
Premium tasting - €60. The full monty, lots of wine and food!
Walking tour - €6.50. Take it before or after a tasting; a walk through the fields with lots of info about the methods used. Straw hat and water provided!
Mini train tour - €18. Travel in style round the whole bodega, learn all about production and taste four wines with nibbles.
Picnic - €30. Does what it says on the tin; a picnic basket full of wine and goodies - baguette, cheese, tomato, olive, sausage, almonds – just find a nice spot and relax. This one's for summer only, April to October.
Sounds good doesn't it? If you fancy going, you can book online through their website (just click the link) or give them a ring.
